The Shell House Attack

In March 1994 about 20.000 supporters of the Inkatha Freedom Party marched to the ANC headquarters, called Shell House, to protest against the 1994 elections, which the IFP intended to boycott. ANC activists opened fire and killed 19 IFP people, pretending that the IFP supporters were intending to storm the building. The incident reflected the rising tensions between the ANC and IFP, which had begun in the 1980s in KwaZulu Natal. The IFP claimed that the ANC was intent on undermining traditional authorities and the power of Zulu Chiefs

Eli Kobeli beschrieb sein Werk: “There are a number of squatter camps in Soweto, Mamelodi, Kathelong, Langaville all around South Africa, which have been called Mandela´s villages. The central face in the painting shows us a woman who is watching over the camp as she knows no other home. You see a woman carrying firewood to light a fire in her shack. A mother is talking to her child, carrying a bucket with water on her head. Her washing is on the line; children playing in the streets and men walking to look for a job. Eli Kobeli schrieb über dieses Werk: “The five men are gathered together and they are having a discussion about their Shebeens in the township. They have to employ some bouncers to control the customers, but so for all of them it hasn´t been to bad this year. In the lefthand corner you see the words “Terror Game”, meaning the customers are rough that they cater to so by talking to each other they keep track of them and after a handshake they go back to work.”

Über den Hintergrund dieses Bildes schrieb Eli Kobeli: “In the years between “1948 - 1989 a black resident had to have a pass to work or live in Johannesburg and if found without one was sent back to his rural area or place of origin, but not before spending some time in jail and having to pay a fine. Pass raids by the South African police came out of the blue and black South Africans often tried to escape by rushing away.

Eli Kobeli schrieb über dieses Bild: “Before the election in 1994 the Inkartha Freedom Party marched to the library buildings in Market Street and there were moved down by the Third Force of Mandela´s ANC members. It is not really clear on this issue but the Truth and Reconciliation Commission was busy with Eugene De Kock´s trial, as he was a prominint member of the force and responsible for many innocent people. In the painting you can see my comment: “The shooting was to build hatress between ANC and IFP.” Note the shields and red headbands of the Zulu´s, the IFP and the unjustness of the situation.”
